At the beginning of the story, Gill has lost all faith in humanity. Creditors plan to foreclose on his home, his father is befuddled with drink, and his wealthy childhood sweetheart Sylvia \u2013 heartbroken at his apparent indifference \u2013 breaks off their engagement. Walsh remains one of Ireland\u2019s most beloved novelists and most accomplished storytellers. To many, including\u00a0Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), he was the greatest storyteller of his time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For all of Walsh\u2019s fame as an author during the 1930s-40s, all of his novels are now out-of-print. Nevertheless, second-hand online booksellers know that they remain popular with readers of all generations for their quintessential Irish charm.<br><br>Remarkably, only four of the twenty or so novels and collections of short stories by Walsh are set in Ireland. Published in 1948, Castle Gillian\u00a0is referred to as the 3rd. of the four Ireland novels written by the author; the other three being, <em>The Road To Nowhere<\/em> (1934),\u00a0<em>Green Rushes<\/em> (1935) <em>and\u00a0A Strange Woman\u2019s Daughter<\/em> (1954).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maurice Walsh is probably best known today by filmgoers for the film adaptation of his short story\u00a0<em>The Quiet Man<\/em>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0from the separately connected short stories that make up the novel,\u00a0Green Rushes (1935). <em>The Quiet Man<\/em>\u00a0was made into an\u00a0Oscar- winning movie in 1952 directed by\u00a0John Ford\u00a0and starring\u00a0John Wayne\u00a0and\u00a0Maureen O\u2019Hara.<br><br>American film director, Martin Scorsese, believes Ford\u2019s classic film \u201c\u2026is one of the greatest movies of all time.\u201d Interviewed for a documentary celebrating the 60th anniversary of the film in 2012, the director was insistent, \u201cIt\u2019s not a movie.
